Ever spotted a scaffolder on a red carpet, or featured in a national awards show? You’ll be surprised to learn that sometimes showbiz and scaffolding can go together. Here’s a list of former scaffolders who laid down their hammers and clamps, to claim new titles in the celebrity world.
Paul Hogan
You wouldn’t associate the Crocodile Dundee star with the scaffolding trade, but Paul spent time working structures at the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Working in the trade funded his life in Australia, before his television career launched him to superstar status – with a trademark cork hat in tow.
Tom Davis
You can imagine the chorus of laughter on the construction site once comedian and actor, Tom Davis, turned up for his shift. Tom retired his tools to embrace his creative side and was given his first break by Leigh Francis. He was later shortlisted as a Bafta Breakthrough Brit in 2016.
Adrian Chiles
Raised in the scaffolding trade, Adrian’s father owned a scaffolding business in Worcestershire. He was trained in the skill, but later went to university and graduated with a degree in English Literature. Once a sports reporter for the News of the World, you’ll now find him presenting for BBC Radio 5 Live.
DJ Carl Cox
If the Balearic Island of Ibiza has ever crossed your mind, you’ll be aware of renowned DJ, Carl Cox. Synonymous with Space Ibiza, Carl started working as a scaffolder in South London, at the humble age of 16. You’ll now find him mixing and collecting records to play in front of huge crowds across the globe.
Matt Skelton
The former scaffolder stepped away from the construction industry to devote himself to kickboxing and martial arts. Matt went on to hold British, English and commonwealth boxing titles from 2003 to 2006, not to mention the super-heavyweight Muay Thai title he held from 2000 to 2001.
